Mary Winfrey Morris

Mary Morris, 81, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022, in Logan, UT due to medical complications. Mary was born February 17, 1941, in Bluefield, WV, the youngest daughter of Hubert Price Winfrey and Mary Virginia Willis. She married James (Jim) Overton Morris, Jr., in Alexandria, VA, on August 5, 1960. They had 52 years together. Mary and Jim had two daughters, one son, eight grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mary grew up in Bluefield, WV, and Martinsville, VA, with her sister Margaret Ann. After graduating from high school, she worked in Washington, DC. Mary enjoyed time with family and friends on excursions to places like New York, NY, and Annapolis, MD.

After Mary and Jim were married, they lived in Denver, CO, then moved back to Martinsville, VA, for 11 years. In 1973, Mary and Jim brought their family to Cache Valley, UT, settling in Newton for 39 years. They then moved to Providence, UT where she resided after Jim passed away.

Mary worked in several jobs over the years. However, her last job with the International Student Office at Utah State University was her most rewarding as she met so many amazing international students who forever held a special place in her heart. Mary also enjoyed time spent babysitting for neighborhood families and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was a very social lady who always enjoyed going out with friends and family and attending theater productions. She was very giving of her time and talents that made an impact on many. Mary made many lifelong friends that she cherished “and never met a stranger”. Throughout our lives, we were always told that Mary was “the sweetest lady” by all who met her.

Mary was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held various callings and enjoyed them all. She also found a passion for genealogy during her retirement years. Her family learned a lot from her and are thankful for the legacy of love she left. She had an inner strength and endless determination to overcome many physical challenges throughout her life. She was happy and positive and shared that with everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her granddaughter, Sabrina Kae Kelsey. Mary is survived by her three children, Karen Spackman of Providence, UT; Stephen Morris of McKinney, TX; Kay (and husband Lance) Kelsey of Logan, UT; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister Margaret Ann Hart of Ashburn, VA, and sister-in-law Anne (and husband J.R.) Zepkin of Williamsburg, VA.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am, Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Newton 2nd ward LDS Chapel located at 12 South 100 West Newton, UT; Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 am also at the Newton Church.  The interment will be in the Newton Cemetery.
